Changes In DSM-5: Racism Can Cause PTSD Similar To That Of Soldiers After War

Updates to the recently released DSM-5 could potentially transform how race-based traumas are diagnosed in ethnic minorities.

Dr. Monnica T. Williams suggests that proposed changes in the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) could increase the potential for better recognition of race-based trauma in racial and ethnic minorities.

In a recent article in Psychology Today, Williams, who is a clinical psychologist and the associate director of the University of Louisville's Center for Mental Health Disparities, said that before the release of the DSM-5 Thursday, racism was recognized as a trauma that could potentially cause PTSD, but only in relation to a specific event. There had to be an incident of intense fear,
helplessness, or horror for such consideration. For instance, if someone was assaulted in a racially-motivated event, then racism qualified as a sufficient trauma to be categorized as a cause of PTSD.

But now, under the new definition, the requirements for fear, helplessness, and horror have been removed, making room for the more lasting effects of subtle racism to be considered in the discussion of race-based traumas.

In 2011, researchers found that African Americans who reported experiences of racial discrimination had higher odds of suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). An article on PsychCentral termed the phenomenon as "racial battle fatigue, saying that "exposure to racial discrimination is analogous to the constant pressure soldiers face on the battlefield."

"While the term [racial battle fatigue] is certainly not trying to say that the conditions are exactly what soldiers face on a battlefield, it borrows from the idea that stress is created in chronically unsafe or hostile environments," said Dr. Jose Soto, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at University of California, Berkeley.

Williams builds on that concept, saying that many minorities experience lasting, cumulative effects of racism that could lead to the development of PTSD. "It was found that in many cases, such as soldiers trained in combat, emotional responses are only felt afterward, once removed from the traumatic setting," she wrote. So, even when experiences aren't immediate and earth-shattering, their effects can have the magnitude to cause long-lasting trauma.

The addition of factors like intrusion symptoms, persistent avoidance, alteration in cognition and mood, and hyperarousal and reactivity to the DSM-5 bode well for the treatment of patients experiencing race-based trauma, according to Williams.

The DSM-5, which is often referred to as the mental health "bible," was released amid skepticism, including an announcement from the National Institute for Mental Health that it will no longer fund research based on DSM clusters.

Negative Emotions Are Key to Well-Being

Feeling sad, mad, critical or otherwise awful? Surprise: negative emotions are essential for mental health

A client sits before me, seeking help untangling his relationship problems. As a psychotherapist, I strive to be warm, nonjudgmental and encouraging. I am a bit unsettled, then, when in the midst of describing his painful experiences, he says, “I'm sorry for being so negative.”

A crucial goal of therapy is to learn to acknowledge and express a full range of emotions, and here was a client apologizing for doing just that. In my psychotherapy practice, many of my clients struggle with highly distressing emotions, such as extreme anger, or with suicidal thoughts. In recent years I have noticed an increase in the number of people who also feel guilty or ashamed about what they perceive to be negativity. Such reactions undoubtedly stem from our culture's overriding bias toward positive thinking. Although positive emotions are worth cultivating, problems arise when people start believing they must be upbeat all the time.

In fact, anger and sadness are an important part of life, and new research shows that experiencing and accepting such emotions are vital to our mental health. Attempting to suppress thoughts can backfire and even diminish our sense of contentment. “Acknowledging the complexity of life may be an especially fruitful path to psychological well-being,” says psychologist Jonathan M. Adler of the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering.

Meaningful Misery


Positive thoughts and emotions can, of course, benefit mental health. Hedonic theories define well-being as the presence of positive emotion, the relative absence of negative emotion and a sense of life satisfaction. Taken to an extreme, however, that definition is not congruent with the messiness of real life. In addition, people's outlook can become so rosy that they ignore dangers or become complacent [see “Can Positive Thinking Be Negative?” by Scott O. Lilienfeld and Hal Arkowitz; Scientific American Mind, May/June 2011].
Eudaemonic approaches, on the other hand, emphasize a sense of meaning, personal growth and understanding of the self—goals that require confronting life's adversities. Unpleasant feelings are just as crucial as the enjoyable ones in helping you make sense of life's ups and downs. “Remember, one of the primary reasons we have emotions in the first place is to help us evaluate our experiences,” Adler says.

Adler and Hal E. Hershfield, a professor of marketing at New York University, investigated the link between mixed emotional experience and psychological welfare in a group of people undergoing 12 sessions of psychotherapy. Before each session, participants completed a questionnaire that assessed their psychological well-being. They also wrote narratives describing their life events and their time in therapy, which were coded for emotional content. As Adler and Hershfield reported in 2012, feeling cheerful and dejected at the same time—for example, “I feel sad at times because of everything I've been through, but I'm also happy and hopeful because I'm working through my issues”—preceded improvements in well-being over the next week or two for subjects, even if the mixed feelings were unpleasant at the time. “Taking the good and the bad together may detoxify the bad experiences, allowing you to make meaning out of them in a way that supports psychological well-being,” the researchers found.

Negative emotions also most likely aid in our survival. Bad feelings can be vital clues that a health issue, relationship or other important matter needs attention, Adler points out. The survival value of negative thoughts and emotions may help explain why suppressing them is so fruitless. In a 2009 study psychologist David J. Kavanagh of Queensland University of Technology in Australia and his colleagues asked people in treatment for alcohol abuse and addiction to complete a questionnaire that assessed their drinking-related urges and cravings, as well as any attempts to suppress thoughts related to booze over the previous 24 hours. They found that those who often fought against intrusive alcohol-related thoughts actually harbored more of them. Similar findings from a 2010 study suggested that pushing back negative emotions could spawn more emotional overeating than simply recognizing that you were, say, upset, agitated or blue.

Even if you successfully avoid contemplating a topic, your subconscious may still dwell on it. In a 2011 study psychologist Richard A. Bryant and his colleagues at the University of New South Wales in Sydney told some participants, but not others, to suppress an unwanted thought prior to sleep. Those who tried to muffle the thought reported dreaming about it more, a phenomenon called dream rebound.

Suppressing thoughts and feelings can even be harmful. In a 2012 study psychotherapist Eric L. Garland of Florida State University and his associates measured a stress response based on heart rate in 58 adults in treatment for alcohol dependence while exposing them to alcohol-related cues. Subjects also completed a measure of their tendency to suppress thoughts. The researchers found that those who restrained their thinking more often had stronger stress responses to the cues than did those who suppressed their thoughts less frequently.

 

Accepting the Pain


Instead of backing away from negative emotions, accept them. Acknowledge how you are feeling without rushing to change your emotional state. Many people find it helpful to breathe slowly and deeply while learning to tolerate strong feelings or to imagine the feelings as floating clouds, as a reminder that they will pass. I often tell my clients that a thought is just a thought and a feeling just a feeling, nothing more.

If the emotion is overwhelming, you may want to express how you feel in a journal or to another person. The exercise may shift your perspective and bring a sense of closure. If the discomfort lingers, consider taking action. You may want to tell a friend her comment was hurtful or take steps to leave the job that makes you miserable.

You may also try doing mindfulness exercises to help you become aware of your present experience without passing judgment on it. One way to train yourself to adopt this state is to focus on your breathing while meditating and simply acknowledge any fleeting thoughts or feelings. This practice may make it easier to accept unpleasant thoughts [see “Being in the Now,” by Amishi P. Jha; Scientific American Mind, March/April 2013]. Earlier this year Garland and his colleagues found that among 125 individuals with a history of trauma who were also in treatment for substance dependence, those who were naturally more mindful both coped better with their trauma and craved their drug less.
Likewise, in a 2012 study psychologist Shannon Sauer-Zavala of Boston University and her co-workers found that a therapy that included mindfulness training helped individuals overcome anxiety disorders. It worked not by minimizing the number of negative feelings but by training patients to accept those feelings.

“It is impossible to avoid negative emotions altogether because to live is to experience setbacks and conflicts,” Sauer-Zavala says. Learning how to cope with those emotions is the key, she adds. Indeed, once my client accepted his thoughts and feelings, shaking off his shame and guilt, he saw his problems with greater clarity and proceeded down the path to recovery.

Fear is a pure form of stress.
 
We all try as best as we can to avoid fear, but the emotion is the key to survival.
When humans recognize they are in acute danger, the brain triggers a cascade of physical alarms.

   The body releases chemicals to suppress pain.
 
Then the individual is ready either to run for cover or to stand and fight.
An aggressive move often is enough to make a foe back down.
 
Lashing out in self-defense is a common response.
 
Researchers call this facilitative aggression or reactive aggression.
 
There is another form of violence--an evil form--called appetitive aggression.
Appetitive aggression arises from the thrill of the hunt.
 
The act of planning an attack can arouse intense excitement.

Appetitive aggression is a common phenomenon--which makes it truly frightening.
 
The more that young men perceive violence as giving them feelings of superiority and pleasure that otherwise are lacking in their lives--the more frequently they engage in aggressive acts and the more the young men seek out the stimulation that hunting and killing provides.
 
Inflicting pain on others is part of a human's basic stock of behaviors--every bit as much as caring for the sick and the injured.
 
The question is why it is part of the basic stock of behaviors.

A few million years ago, our ancestors began to hunt and to eat meat.

This provided a concentrated source of energy lacking in an earlier all-vegetarian diet.
 
According to one theory, eating meat allowed humans' energy-intensive brains to grow bigger and more complex.
 
This evolutionary development provided a cognitive advantage that allowed humans to dominate the planet.
 
The more successful hunters could feed more offspring, attract more sexual partners, and attain higher status in a group.

Humans not only hunt other animals, but when conflict arises, humans hunt members of our own species.
 
Culture is what constrains individuals and society from wanton violence (malicious and unrestrained violence) by outlining who is friend and who is foe.
Humans are socialized into a code of conduct that disapproves of antagonizing those belonging to our own group.

Attention has not been devoted to understanding what the consequences are when the civil code of conduct is violated on a grand scale.
 
Insights into the psychology of war are all-important to help societies rebuild after periods of conflict.
 
Trauma research documents that the greater an individual's exposure to life-threatening events, the greater the likelihood the person will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
 
This connection has been observed in soldiers and civilians.
 
In the evolutionary past of humans, the question becomes whether the killing of our own kind evolved as an innate strategy for securing greater reproductive success.
 
Perhaps violence might not always lead to trauma.

An opportunity to examine the idea arose with 269 Rwandan prisoners who were accused or convicted of crimes related to the genocide that occurred in 1994.
 
The prisoners were asked about the types of trauma they encountered and were asked about the crimes they committed.
 
The severity of their PTSD symptoms were assessed and the prisoners were probed to determine whether they had acquired a taste for violence.

Two questions asked of the prisoners were:
 
   Once fighting has started, do you get carried away by the violence?
 
   Once you get used to being cruel, do you want to be crueler and crueler?
 
One-third of the men answered they did; few women said that it was true for them.
 
In two other questions, more than one-half of the men agreed that they tended to get carried away by the violence of a fight, and that defeating an opponent was more fun when they saw blood.
 
30% of the women agreed they get carried away, and 40% admitted that blood made defeating an opponent more fun.
 
Although women were not as likely to develop a zeal for aggression, they were not immune to it.

Data collected from Rwanda, Ugandan child soldiers, and South African criminal offenders showed a trend.
 
The more violent the events were that these people witnesses or committed--the higher their rating on the questionnaire concerning appetitive aggression.
 
These higher scores also predicted fewer symptoms of PTSD; the correlation is that relishing violence benefited their mental health.

Observing atrocities and engaging in them predicts the enjoyment of cruelty.
Despite these findings conflicting with society's deeply held sense that violence is morally repulsive, the findings help the public comprehend how conflicts perpetuate and how so many people can die so quickly in genocidal sweeps.

In 2011, military historian Sönke Neitzel and social psychologist Harald Welzer published excerpts from the transcripts of World War II Allies who had eavesdropped on captured soldiers from the German Wehrmacht (German armed forces; combined German military branches).
 
The conversations revealed that among some of the fighters, there was a fascination with violence and the hunting down of humans.
 
The revelations upset the former war participants who feared being labeled as monsters.
 
But the transcripts were consistent with studies.

Then there is the question as to what happens when combatants return to society.
 
The hypothesis was that their lust for violence would subside.
 
Evidence showed that those who spent more time in society after the events of atrocity, the lower their scores on aggression but the higher their symptoms of trauma.
 
This is because violence is perceived as more acceptable when operating in perpetrator mode, but it becomes less acceptable when the person is returned to the tempering influence of social culture.

All the data suggests that the thrill of the kill is not a sign of mental illness and is it is not uncommon.
 
Human ancestors on the hunt were not so different from contemporary combatants.

Both groups experience great hardships; sometimes they must track their prey for days; and they must suppress their fear of being injured or killed entirely.
To endure these conditions, behaving brutally must become rewarding and potentially pleasurable.

This is not to say that humans enjoy murder.
 
Only child soldiers--who have been recruited by force before reaching puberty--sometimes describe their first kill in glowing terms.
 
Most everyone experiences extreme stress.
 
But relentless battle can break down moral inhibitions and can alter perceptions of actions.
 
War changes people.

Former soldiers talk of how their previous life provided them the opportunity to fight, rape, and kill.
 
They discuss their overwhelming sense of isolation now that they no longer are involved in heroic deeds that other fighters understand, but that civilians reject summarily.
 
Many express how they miss the power and how the sight of blood gets them going.

Because the public struggles to comprehend what happens in war, soldiers often lack finding and receiving adequate social support when they return to civilian life.
 
They may struggle with emotions that conflict with the values of their surrounding culture.
 
They may fail to adjust to new opportunities and new ways of life.
 
In order to begin counseling combatants, it is important to understand their experiences in the heat of battle so as to integrate them back into society and to help curb the calamity brought on by violence.

What do conspiracy theories, religious beliefs and detoxifying proteins have in common?

Why do people believe in God, ghosts, goblins, spirits, the afterlife and conspiracy theories? Two common threads running through these belief systems are what skeptic Michael Shermer in his insightful book “The Believing Brain” calls “patternicity” and “agenticity”. As the names indicate, patternicity refers to seeing meaningful patterns in meaningless noise. Agenticity refers to seeing mysterious but palpable causal ‘agents’, puppet masters who pull the strings and bring about unexplained phenomena. God is probably the perfect example of an agent.

Patternicity and agenticity can both be seen as primitive evolutionary features of our brain that have been molded into instinctive behaviors. They were important in a paleolithic environment where decisions often had to be made quickly and based on instinct. In a simple example cited by Shermer, consider an early hominid sauntering along somewhere in the African Savannah. He hears a rustle in the grass. Is it a predator or is it just the wind? If he assumes the former and it turns out to be the latter, no harm is done. But if he assumes it’s just the wind and lets down his guard and it turns out to be a predator, that’s it; he’s lunch and just got weeded out of the gene pool. The first mistake is what’s called a ‘Type 1’ or false-positive error; the second one is a ‘Type 2’ or a false-negative error. Humans seem more prone to committing false positive errors because the cost of (literally) living with those errors is often less than the cost of (literally) dying from the false negatives. Agenticity is in some sense subsumed by patternicity; in the case of the hominid, he might end up ascribing the noise in the grass to a predator (an ‘agent’) even if none exists. The important thing to realize is that we are largely the descendants of humans who made false-positive errors; natural selection ensured this perpetuation.

Before we move on it’s worth noting that assuring yourself a place in the genetic pool by committing a false positive error is not as failsafe as it sounds.

Sometimes people can actually cause harm by erring on the side of caution; this is the kind of behavior that is enshrined in the Law of Unintended Consequences. For instance after 9/11, about a thousand people died because they thought it safer to drive across the country rather than fly. 9/11 did almost nothing to tarnish the safety record of flying, but those who feared airplane terrorism (the ‘pattern’) reacted with their gut and ended up doing their competitors’ gene pools a favor.

Yet for all this criticism of pattern detection, it goes without saying that patternicity and agenticity have been immensely useful in human development. In fact the hallmark of science is pattern detection in noise. Patternicity is also key for things like solving crimes and predicting where the economy is going. However scientists, detectives and economists are all well aware of how many times the pattern detection machine in their heads misfires or backfires. When it comes to non-scientific predictions the machine’s even worse. The ugly side of patternicity and agenticity is revealed in people’s belief in conspiracy theories.
Those who think there was a giant conspiracy between the CIA, the FBI, the Mob, Castro and the executive branch of the government are confronted with the same facts that others are. Yet they connect the dots differently and elevate certain individuals and groups (‘agents’) to great significance. Patternicity connects the dots, agenticity sows belief. The tendency to connect dots and put certain agents on a pedestal is seen everywhere, from believing that vaccines cause autism to being convinced that climate change is a giant hoax orchestrated by thousands of scientists around the world.

Notwithstanding these all too common pathologies of the pattern detection machine, it’s satisfying to find a common, elegant evolutionary mechanism in our primitive brain that would be consistent with generally favoring false positives over false negatives. What I find interesting is that this behavior even seems to exist at the level of molecules.

I realized this when I was recently studying some proteins whose exclusive job is to metabolize and detoxify foreign molecules. These proteins can be seen as the gatekeepers of the cell. Throughout evolution we have been bathed in a sea of useful, useless and toxic chemicals. Our bodies need some mechanism for distinguishing the good molecules from the bad. To enable this living organisms have evolved several proteins which bind to these molecules and in most cases change their structure or simply eject them from the cell. The most important of these are called cytochrome P450 and P-Glycoprotein. Cytochrome P450 metabolizes drugs, nutrients, hormones, poisons; basically any molecular entities that living organisms encounter in a changing environment. P-Glycoprotein is a kind of vacuum cleaner that first sucks up molecules and then throws them out.

Cytochrome P450 and P-Glycoprotein are crucial for detoxifying our body and letting only ‘good’ molecules pass through. But like our early hominid they are imperfect and seem to often err on the side of caution, making false positive errors. This problem is routinely confronted by drug developers who are consternated to find molecules that may perform perfectly in killing cancer cells in test tubes, but that are immediately modified or ejected out of the cells by cytochrome P450 and P-Glycoprotein when administered to test subjects like rats or human beings. Finding a putative drug compound that will not be modified or rejected by cytochrome P450, P-Glycoprotein or any number of other gatekeeper proteins is one of the biggest challenges in early stage drug development.

And yet if we think about it, both cytochrome P450 and humans are doing the bidding of patternicity and agenticity. For a human as well as for a protein, generally speaking it’s much safer to make a false positive error than a false negative one. In case of cytochrome P450, it might be ok if it discards a useful nutrient or two along with dozens of toxic chemicals. But if it lets even two or three deadly compounds from, say, snail toxin or snake venom in, those might be the last compounds it encounters during the painfully short lifetime of its human owner. Now of course, at the beginning when cytochrome P450 was in the process of evolving it probably existed in many more forms than what it does today. Some of these forms committed false positive mistakes and others committed false negatives. But it’s clear from the ongoing discussion that just like the human hearing the rustle in the grass and mistaking it for the wind, proteins which committed false negative errors were declared persona non grata by natural selection and weeded out. Those making false positive mistakes lived another day to see another molecule ejected.

To me the observation of patternicity and agenticity at the level of human brains as well as individual proteins is a testament to the enormous power and elegance of evolution in molding living organisms across an incredible hierarchy of molecules, cells, organs, individuals and societies through common mechanisms. It occurs to me that if evolution had to pick favorite lines from poems, one of them would probably be “Two roads diverged on the way to life, and I took the one which made me commit a false positive error”.

What Boston Showed about Human Nature

In the seconds after the explosions came an answer to an ancient question: Are we by nature good, or bad?

At 2:50 PM on Monday, April 15, I was sitting in my Cambridge office, separated from the finish line of the Boston Marathon by 2.5 miles of parks, city streets, and the iconic Charles River.  Around 3:00 PM, I started receiving what would soon become a flood of messages—texts, emails, and Facebook chats, from friends, family members, and high-school classmates: “Are you ok?” “Are you safe?” “You’re not at the marathon, are you?”

This is how I learned what else happened at 2:50 PM.  This is how I learned that mere miles away, two home-made bombs had detonated, killing three people and wounding 183 more.  And this is what led me to pace the halls of my building, knocking on every door; to contact, in any way possible, friends I knew were there, at that finish line; to make sure that these people—my people—were safe.
In times of distress and unease—of apparent attack—it’s easy to think in us-vs-them terms: to care only about our people, our city, our country.

But if these attacks were perpetrated against any “us,” it was the “us” of humankind.  The official list of marathon participants includes more than 23,000 athletes: males and females ranging in age from 18 to 83; runners, handcyclists, and wheelchair operators; citizens of 96 different countries and 6 of 7 continents (only Antarctica—which is not home to any permanent human residents—was not represented).  They were us.  And they were diverse.

The bombs exploded at a site celebrating this magnificent diversity—along the home stretch of the Marathon, a section of Boylston Street lined with the flags of each participant’s native country.  This diversity was also displayed by the injured, and the dead—an 8-year-old boy, a 29-year-old restaurant manager, a 23-year-old Chinese graduate student.

This was, and is, a tragedy.  There is no denying it.

But in the midst of this tragedy, there also was—and is—an unmistakable beauty.
In the immediate aftermath of the explosions—even as debris continued to fly through the air—countless people ran not away from the blasts, but towards them.  These people had no way of knowing whether or not there would be more explosions, no way of knowing whether or not they were putting their own lives in danger; they simply saw others in need and immediately rushed to help.  At the same time, more people—many of them marathoners who had just completed a draining 26.2 mile test of endurance—began to rush en masse to nearby Massachusetts General Hospital, seeking to give their own blood for the hundreds of wounded that would soon follow.  In fact, so many people showed up that the hospital was forced, multiple times, to turn away would-be donors; there were simply too many people trying to help.

These overwhelming displays of helping—of selflessness and what psychologists call “prosocial behavior”—are beautiful in and of themselves.  But they are even more beautiful because they transcend us-vs-them ways of thinking.  These actions were not reserved for members of one group, one city, or one country; they were enacted without preference or prejudice, directed at victims of every color, creed, age, and gender.  And they are still more beautiful because of their immediacy.  These actions were not the result of carefully considered decisions, of weighing the pros and cons of each possible behavior; they were virtually instantaneous, seemingly born of a raw, instinctive urge to help those in need.  In the face of overwhelming tragedy, people sought to help the “us” of humankind—immediately, prodigiously, and with little regard for their own safety.

A long tradition of research in social and evolutionary psychology tells us that this behavior doesn’t make sense.  That people operate according to fundamentally selfish instincts, and that these selfish instincts can be found in every organism, every cell, and every gene.  According to this tradition, thinking of any “us” at all can be explained as a means to the end of preserving one’s own physical and psychological well-being, living to see another day, and producing children that have a reasonable chance of doing the same.  Ostensibly altruistic behaviors—everything from sharing resources to laying down one’s life to save others—can be explained by fundamentally selfish motives like reputational concerns (the desire to be seen in a positive light), kin selection (the desire to preserve one’s genetic material, sometimes even at the cost of one’s own life), or simply a desire to ease the personal discomfort that comes along with viewing others in distress.  In short, people help others to help themselves.

But other research tells a different story.  When people find “lost” letters on the sidewalk, they tend to mail them to the intended recipients, even though this good deed will receive no recognition or reward, does nothing to further their own genetic legacy, and probably does not relieve much personal distress.  People make anonymous financial donations, and as many as 32% are even willing to anonymously donate their own internal organs—while still living—to complete strangers.  Even children who are four years old spontaneously help others with no apparent concern for approval from friends and/or authority figures, personal benefits, or moral (good/bad) imperatives.  Examples such as these provide a counterargument to the selfish view of human nature that has long dominated psychological research.  They suggest that people may help others with little or no thought for their own well-being; people may help others simply because they need to be helped.

Of course, it could be that these heartwarming actions can also be explained by selfish motives, ones that are simply more difficult to pin down.  Or it could be that these actions represent the outcome of hard-fought battles pitting conscious control against selfish core impulses—victories for virtue, yes, but ones that require continuous effort and are likely to be surrendered as soon as people are unable or unwilling to continue overriding their selfish impulses.  It could be that when caring for others threatens people’s own welfare, they will retreat into increasingly smaller moral circles—from caring for the “us” of humankind to the “us” of their families, friends, and ingroup members; from caring about this restricted “us” to only caring about themselves.  It could be that, when people are put to the ultimate test, self-preservation will always win out.

The Boston Marathon bombings put people to this test.  The attack created chaos, pain, and destruction; it destroyed lives and landscapes.  It destroyed pretense.  Those on the scene were immediately forced to face the jarring reality of those who had already been injured—a reality that represented both these victims’ need for help and the possibility that providing help could result in personal injury from further explosions.  In this situation, people had neither the time nor the resources to override impulses or think strategically; they could only react, behaving intuitively and emotionally.

It is in these reactions that I see beauty.  In the initial movements of the helpers—the first responders, the blood donators, the countless men and women who rushed in to do anything and everything they could to fix the gaping hole left by those Monday afternoon explosions—I see an extreme example of the human capacity for selflessness.  I see evidence that people tend to intuitively, instinctively, and perhaps automatically reach out to others in times of need.  I see that extreme situations can cause people to transcend us-vs-them thinking, uniting diverse peoples into the “us” of humankind.

In the few days since the bombings, the intervening eventscontinued loss of life, a night filled with sirens and shootouts, a day spent in “lockdown,” the capture of a 19-year-old, and the heartfelt displays of appreciation for law enforcement—have threatened to prematurely relegate the explosions on Boylston Street to the past.  Similarly, the delayed reactions of some—actively seeking a “them” to set up in opposition to “us”—have threatened to overshadow the immediate and selfless reactions shown by those at the scene.  Taken together, these actions and reactions show that people are complex, confusing, and often self-contradictory.  However, they also highlight the immense capacity for human goodness present in the midst of this complexity.
They offer the hope, at least, that the good in people will always overcome the bad.

Study: Belief in an angry God associated with variety of mental illnesses

People who believe in an angry, punishing God are much more likely to suffer from a variety of mental illnesses, a scientific study published in the April edition of Journal of Religion & Health finds.

The study, conducted by Marymount Manhattan College Assistant Psychology Professor Nava Silton, used data from the 2010 Baylor Religion Survey of US Adults to examine the links between beliefs and anxiety disorders like social dysfunction, paranoia, obsession and compulsion.

To do this, Silton viewed the data through the lens of what’s called Evolutionary Threat Assessment System Theory, which posits that parts of the brain specifically evolved to detect threats, and suggests that many anxiety disorders may be a result of dysfunction in the brain’s perception of those threats.

In keeping with prior studies on this very subject, she queried the data on three types of believers: those who see God as angry, those who see God as neutral and those who see God as loving. Controlling specifically to weed out the non-believers, Silton found that a belief in a forgiving, loving God is associated with positive psychological traits, “almost protecting against psychopathology,” she told Raw Story.

But for those who think God is angry and preparing punishments for sinners, “that belief seems to be very much related to these negative symptoms,” Silton said.

“If you look at the previous research, they’ve connected it to depression and all sorts of other psychiatric disorders,” she said. “We were looking at social phobia, obsession, compulsion, paranoia and a lot of features of anxiety disorders.”

One thing Silton stressed is that her study should not be construed to have found a cause for such symptoms. “We are not looking at casual findings here,” she said. “We are looking at correlational findings. That means we’re not saying belief caused psychiatric symptoms, but we see relationships between beliefs and these psychiatric symptoms.”

Silton said that while her study was mostly quantitative in nature, she’s looking forward to “asking more qualitative questions” in future work, specifically “to look into what else belief systems might be related to.”

“We’d like to look more specifically at depression and eating disorders,” she said. “Do different beliefs in God relate to eating disorder symptoms? So, [we want to be] looking beyond just anxiety disorders.”

The Boston Marathon Bombing and the Limits of Human Empathy

We can grieve and mourn the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. However, the ritual of loss--and of beginning a righteous search (as opposed to a witch hunt where our Arab and Muslim brothers and sisters are abused and harassed, while the White Right and the American militia crowd is treated as de facto above suspicion) for those individual(s) who committed this crime--should not interfere with critical thinking, national introspection, or truth-telling.

Moreover, I would also suggest that this is precisely the time, when a people are surprised, hurt, and made to feel vulnerable, that difficult questions about justice and the human condition should be asked. Once the shock passes and a callus forms, it is easy to ignore foundational questions about our shared human existence and what ties us together.

Ultimately, when the illusion of perpetual safety and security has been shattered a bit--and when all Americans across the colorline have been made to feel  "vulnerable, unsafe, and insecure"--is precisely the time when a critical moment of self-reflection should take place.

A question. What are the limits of human empathy?  3 people were killed and many dozens injured and maimed by the Boston Marathon bombing on Monday. By comparison, many more people are killed by American drones and other weapons of war on a weekly, if not daily basis, across the Middle East and in other parts of the world.

The language of "war" and "terrorism" deems these people not human, but rather "targets" and "terrorists" to be "neutralized." The CIA and other organs of the United States government admit that their targeting procedures are imprecise, and that in killing one "terrorist" many more people who are guilty of nothing more than being nearby are also annihilated, broken apart, burned alive, and shattered.

The metrics are against the United States: her war machine is killing many more innocents than the "guilty," thus, ensuring blow back for years to come.
Speech is political. It reinforces certain types of realities and norms. Here, "those" people are deemed legitimate targets of violence and death. "Our" people are innocent and should be safe in their personhood and body at all times.
Is this calculus the necessary result of nationalism and "patriotism?" Why are the lives of those folks who just happen to live in other countries cheaper and less valuable than Americans?

Is the nation state built upon the fictive ties of those who live in geographic proximity to one another, or in the same imagined country or territory? By design, are our ties to other human beings, who by coincidence of birth live in other parts of the world, diminished and minimized?

I wonder how much better, or perhaps worse in some counter intuitive ways, our world would be if the American people could be as upset about the deaths from the bombing of the Boston Massacre, as those others which occur almost everyday, all over the world--many of which are either directly or indirectly done in supposed pursuit of "national defense" and/or the the United States' "national security."

Do we dare to dream?
